Who we are

At Sheridan, we believe in nurturing curious minds, compassionate hearts, and confident voices. Our progressive approach to education empowers students to think critically, collaborate thoughtfully, and engage deeply with the world around them. Sheridan students are not merely passive consumers of information, but are deliberately engaged in a learning community that seeks to develop within all of its members a spirit of active participation. Grounded in the principles of progressive education, our mutli-faceted approach puts the focus on challenge, experience, justice, and joy.

What sets us apart is that for our students, high-achievement does not mean high-stress. Our teachers are masterful at developing rigorous curriculum that inspires and engages without overwhelming and overburdening. This provides Sheridan students with time and space outside of school to pursue interests and passions beyond schoolwork. This well-rounded experience is key to developing the maturity, self-awareness, and confidence our 8th Grade students exude during their high school application process and beyond.
Challenge at Sheridan is not limited to the classroom. Since 1971, Sheridan has been the only DC area school that owns and operates a second campus fully dedicated to outdoor exploration and learning. Our beloved Mountain Campus, 130 acres in the Shenandoah Mountains, is the site of some of the most memorable moments for Sheridan students, faculty, staff, and parents alike. At Mountain Campus, students test their knowledge of the natural and scientific world, become active participants in conservation and sustainability, learn survival skills and expand their courage as they participate in new and adventurous outdoor challenges.

We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion, in all aspects of identity, create a school community of belonging. We take active steps to design a reflective and peaceful environment in which the identities and backgrounds of our families, students, employees, and community members are recognized, respected, and celebrated.

We invite you to explore our program for yourself and do what we ask our students to do: ask questions, think deeply, and imagine what a high-quality progressive education might look like for your child, now and in the future.
