Who we are

Everyone's a Student, Everyone's a Teacher

Khan Lab School is a non-profit, mastery-based school established in 2014 by Salman Khan, the founder of Khan Academy and Schoolhouse.world and the author of One World Schoolhouse and Brave New Words. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Khan Lab School has two campuses in Palo Alto (grades TK-5) and Mountain View (grades 6-12).

Our learner-centered approach ignites students’ curiosity, promotes student agency and independence, and encourages students to pursue projects that align with their interests and ambitions. As a mastery-based school, we focus on the learning outcomes that matter most and evaluate student growth with meaningful metrics rather than traditional letter grades.

Our Students

Our mission as a community of learners is to empower students to navigate their own path. We believe that young people are capable of far more than society currently recognizes. Instead of competing against one another, students collaborate and make real contributions in the world around them. Our students are not singularly focused on chasing high marks or piling on AP courses (we don’t have them!). Instead they take agency in their own learning, seek to understand and master course content, cultivate a range of interests and skills, demonstrate their achievements in various contexts, and share their learning through peer tutoring. KLS graduates go on to study a wide variety of majors at top colleges and universities throughout the country.

Our Faculty & Administration

Khan Lab School’s faculty and administrators foster a community of learners who love to learn. We work diligently to ensure consistency in mastery across disciplines, while also maintaining a commitment to meeting students where they are. The quality of learning remains consistently high, even as our lab school regularly reimagines and tests new methods of teaching and learning. Our team is committed to this model, designed to help our community share best practices with educators locally and globally.

Our Curriculum

Khan Lab School uses a mastery-based learning model. Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of all competencies and skills identified in a course before moving on, thereby reducing the number of “gaps” in their education. We create space within and beyond the core academics for students to explore their passions and exercise their leadership skills. Physical activity, social-emotional learning, wellness, and creative expression are also central to community life. Explore our Academic programs on our website.
