Who we are

Welcome and thank you for your interest in Maybeck High School!

Maybeck High School is a vibrant community dedicated to learning, where all forms of diversity can flourish amid mutual support, respect, and responsibility. Through our small classes, high expectations, academic excellence, and programs outside the school, students prepare for college and acquire the tools to engage actively and creatively in the wider world. The only non-profit independent high school in Berkeley, we have been educating young people in the East Bay since 1972.

What you should know about us.

We believe in a non-competitive classroom where hard work is rewarded with the understanding that intellectual engagement and growth lifts up the path of justice, equality, and freedom for all.

The average class size is 12 and electives are varied and plentiful. While some classes are grade level specific, most students will also study with students outside of their grade level. Small class sizes encourage responsibility, collaboration, and accountability.

There is no back row in a Maybeck classroom. The teachers and students sit around a table with a text, a lab or an equation. We believe working together in community makes for stronger, sustained learning.

Classes are suspended for 2 weeks every spring so that students and staff, together, can study in-depth a country, a question or a field of interest. Recent programs have included hiking Machu Picchu in Peru, an intensive class with master ceramists in Mendocino, visiting the cities and countryside of Japan, Mexico, and France, appreciating the music and art of Los Angeles, 3D game development, and video production.

Maybeck students take advantage of what the Bay Area has to offer through our Maybeck Beyond program. Together we attend plays, go to museums and beaches, camp and cycle. We have a long history with the University of California Berkeley (Cal), and it is not unusual for our students to take classes at the university or for teachers and students to go on campus for a lecture, reading, sporting event or concert.

We cultivate a community of curious people who enjoy each other, the work of scholarship, and the joy of discovery.
